JOB SUMMARY:

The Custodian is responsible for complying with all instructions and policies pertaining to the agencies buildings and grounds. Duties include cleaning and maintenance of both. Artesia custodians will receive instruction, training, supervision and evaluations from the Maintenance Supervisor and Roswell and Carlsbad custodians will receive instruction, training, supervision and evaluations from the Site Supervisor with input from the Maintenance Supervisor.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One-year experience in building maintenance and custodial work.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Read, speak and write English at a level sufficient to successfully perform the duties associated with the position.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge in basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, building renovations, yard work and landscaping.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, as they relate to the position.
  • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of all tools and understanding of basic practices and procedures of custodial and building maintenance work.
  • Skill in driving motorized lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to express self, in English, in a clear, concise, understandable manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Reflect a pleasant attitude that represents SNMCAC in a positive manner within the community at large, and maintain a professional attitude to the employees, clients and public at all times. Project the same positive manner while attending community activities, training functions, seminars and conferences.
  • Compassionate in accomplishing the objectives and goals of the Head Start Program.

  • As a condition of employment, must meet SNMCAC’s vehicle liability insurance standards (refer to the Human Resources Policy Handbook) in effect at the time of hire and remain insurable during employment with SNMCAC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consistently ~ Occupation requires this approximately 66% – 100% of the time:
  • Maintains buildings in clean and orderly condition.
  • Keeps buildings in good repair, performing routine painting, plumbing and other maintenance work.
  • Performs routine grounds maintenance such as watering lawns/plants and makes minor adjustments to sprinkler systems.
  • Picks up paper and other refuse on grounds and sweeps walks and entrances.
  • Unlocks classrooms in the morning. Makes sure that the furnace/heater or air conditioner is on.
  • Empties all trash and garbage containers daily.
  • Vacuums all the carpets in the classrooms, sweep and mop all classrooms daily.
  • Maintains various classroom and restroom supplies, including towels, soap, tissues and other sanitary items.
  • Cleans all bathrooms daily.
  • Keeps the storage rooms clean and orderly.
  • Keeps janitor’s room neat and orderly.
  • Returns tools, cleaning equipment, etc., to its proper place.
  • Turns off all lights, air-conditioner, lock doors and set alarm before leaving building.
  • Logs out with supervisor before leaving the grounds.
  • Drives agency vehicle(s) as necessary to perform job responsibilities.
  • Maintains equipment used in the course of work in good working condition.
  • Serves as a role model for employees, children, parents, clients and community partners.
  • Maintains good work habits through timeliness and low absenteeism.
  • Punctual at all times.
  • Develops and maintains a positive, professional working relationship with the staff, clients and community.
  • Facilitates open communication with employees, parents, clients and community partners.
  • Knowledge of SNMCAC and Head Start policies, procedures, performance standards and NM state licensing regulations.
  • Complies with SNMCAC’s Confidentiality Policy assuring that the program, children, family and employee records and information are protected at all times.
  • Understands, accepts, implements and promotes SNMCAC’s Mission Statement, program goals, philosophy and objectives.
    Frequently ~ Occupation requires this approximately 33% – 66% of the time:
  • Maintains grounds in neat, orderly condition – mow lawn, trim shrubbery and edge sidewalks.
  • Vacuums/sweeps offices.
  • Assists in moving and/or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture, etc.
  • Measures and mixes chemicals used in course of work according to directions.
  • Uses heavy-duty carpet/vinyl tile cleaning equipment in periodic cleaning of carpets/vinyl tile.
  • Carries out any and all other assignments to meet the goals and objectives of SNMCAC and the Head Start program.
    Occasionally ~ Occupation requires this up to 33% of the time:
  • Strips and waxes floors.
  • Keeps sidewalks free from debris and snow.
  • Repairs or replaces worn playground equipment, ensuring that the equipment is maintained in safe condition.
  • Replaces light bulbs.
  • Receives and distributes shipments of materials and supplies.
  • Notifies immediate supervisor of need for repairs that require a skill level beyond the level required of this position.
  • Sets up, as directed, opens and closes select office areas for meetings and various agency-sponsored events.
  • Performs minor repairs.
  • Performs pick-up and delivery service.
  • Instructs new hires/substitutes in performance of duties.
  • Participates in on-going self and program assessment in order to enhance personal skill and program development/improvement.
  • Participates in workshops, in-service training, as well as, other personal and professional growth opportunities.
  • Attends all required/assigned local and out-of-town Head Start functions, training and staff meetings.
  • Documents and reports any signs of the following: child abuse and neglect, illness or accidents and reports families who appear to have special needs in accordance with agency policies and procedures
